Martin Luther, no not the Great Kang, the German priest, once said:
“Music is the art of the prophets and the gift of God”.
I love this quote because of those last four words. The gift of music is the most powerful force in the world today. I firmly believe that if your friends aren’t suggesting new music to you, then you need new friends. Music has the power to evoke change and shape culture.
I’ll forever be grateful to my grandmother Bernice Townsel, or “No-No” as we called her, for sharing her musical gift and passion with me. My grandma was the head musician at our church in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami. If Overtown sounds familiar to you, it’s because you can see twelve constantly drive by my church on The First 48.
No-No wasn’t just your everyday church musician though. Her and my grandfather gave birth to and raised their own little musical army. Five kids in total. Four boys and one girl, my mom, all popped out the womb with some musical ability. Whether it was playing the piano, saxophone, trombone, or singing, the Townsel 5, a name I just gave them, were tearing up the streets every summer as they dropped mixtape after mixtape…
My bad. Got a little carried away.
I grew up in a house with a piano and keyboard, countless numbers of church hymnals, endless amounts of sheet music, and my favorite part, VINYL RECORDS.
No-No’s collection was insane. Boxes on top of boxes of music. In hindsight, she might have been a bit of a hoarder. But none the less, my grandma’s house was my own musical museum. As mentioned earlier, No-No was a church musician. So I’m positive that ninety percent of those vinyls were old Negro spirituals. But every once in awhile you’d find a record from Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, or Diana Ross.
The gift my grandma gave me in third grade when she handed me my uncle’s trombone. The gift I share with my students as I teach them how to play an instrument. The gift I now plan to share with you.
